Elton Davis (1925-2009)

Elton was born in 1925 on a farm in Craigmont, Idaho, one of six children. He joined the Navy in 1943 and was one of its first radar operators in Honolulu. He fondly remembered his Navy years, having been stationed on the East Coast, in Korea, and in Japan. This, he said, gave him a taste of other cultures and the urge to travel.

Elton earned a B.A. in education and an M.A. in religious studies from Pepperdine University. Early in his career, he was a minister in the Church of Christ in Portland, Los Angeles, and Pasadena. Elton later received a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Southern California. He taught psychology, humanities, and religious studies at Pasadena City College for 36 years. He loved teaching and was a mentor to countless students. For many years, I was also a clinical psychologist in private practice in Pasadena.

This scholarship was created to support students majoring in the Social Sciences who are planning to transfer to a Four-Year University.

To qualify for an Osher Scholarship at Pasadena City College, students must meet the following criteria:

• *Students must have completed 24 or more “degree-applicable” semester units (or the equivalent) at the time of the initial scholarship disbursement.
• Students must be enrolled at least half-time* (6 or more units) during all terms in which the award remains active.
• Students must have received a California College Promise Grant (Also Known As “Board of Governors Waiver”)*

Scholarship Renewals
If Osher Scholars continue to qualify in subsequent academic years, their scholarship may be renewed, up to a cumulative total of three times the annual maximum award (currently $4,800). To renew a scholarship, scholars must log in to Blackbaud Award Management, confirm their renewal, and write their Thank You Letter during the renewal period.* RENEWALS ARE NOT AUTOMATIC.* It is important to note that funding is NOT guaranteed for more than one year at a time, and that all renewals are subject to the availability of funds.
