Wayne Loel Geology Scholarship

The Wayne Loel Geology Scholarship is awarded annually to a student or students in the geological sciences. The purpose of this scholarship is to supply funds for the recognition and aid of geology majors and students of advanced geology courses while they are still students at Pasadena City College. Aid to geology students shall consist of, but not be limited to, the grant of funds to make possible attendance at scientific meetings on campus, in Pasadena, or in communities at reasonable distances. It is consistent with the purposes of this fund to make grants to students requiring funds for independent study or special field trips. In any year in which such expenditure is not called for, the scholarship(s) will be awarded to superior students from Pasadena City College who are successfully pursuing a geological program at a four-year institution or who are leaving Pasadena City College as a promising transfer student.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Be a declared major in Geology
  2. Have successfully completed at least one advanced geology course (Geology 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, or 30) with a grade of better than B.
  3. Have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or greater
  4. Have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in geology courses.
  5. Be accepted to a four-year institution in the fall of the year awarded OR be a continuing student at Pasadena City College and demonstrably require funds to attend and/or participate in a scientific meeting, field trip, or independent study.

Selection Criteria:

  1. GPA in Geology Courses
  2. Performance in advanced Geology Courses (Geology 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 30x)
  3. Overall GPA
  4. Extracurricular activities in Geology
  5. Demonstrated need for funds for meeting attendance, field trips, or field studies in Geology.
  6. Acceptance (and eventual matriculation to) a four-year institution as a geology major; must be demonstrated prior to release of funds unless clause 5 above is demonstrated.
